Commute Mileage

Commute Mileage

Quick definition

Commute mileage is the distance traveled between your home and your regular workplace, which the IRS usually considers personal travel, and thus not reimbursable or tax deductible.

Full definition

Commute mileage is the distance between your home and regular workplace. With few exceptions, the IRS considers this personal travel, making the trip not reimbursable by most employers or tax deductible, regardless of how far you drive or whether you make business calls along the way.

Even though commuting isn't tax deductible or usually provided as mileage reimbursement, employers can still choose to pay for it if they want. However, those payments would not be tax-free.

Some trips from home can qualify as business mileage, including trips to temporary work locations or travel from a home office that qualifies as your principle place of business. Simply working remotely, however, doesn't automatically make every trip from home count as business mileage.
